Shopify Discount Codes Made Simple
Offering discount codes is a great way to attract new customers, reward loyal shoppers, or boost sales during promotions. Shopify makes it quick and easy to create different types of discounts, whether you want to offer a percentage off, a fixed amount, free shipping, or even automatic discounts.
In this guide, I'll show you how to create a simple discount code using the Amount Off Order option, but the process is very similar for the other discount types too.
Step 1: Open Your Shopify Admin
Log in to your Shopify admin dashboard.
Step 2: Go to the Discounts Section
From the menu on the left-hand side, click Discounts.
You'll be taken to the Discounts page where you can view any existing discounts or create a new one.
Step 3: Create a New Discount
Click Create discount.
You'll then be asked what type of discount you'd like to create. For this tutorial, we're using Amount off order, but feel free to choose whichever option best suits your store.
Step 4: Create Your Discount Code
Next, you'll need to create the code your customers will enter at checkout.
You have two options:
- Click Generate random code if you want Shopify to create one for you.
- Or create your own custom code, just like I've done in this example.
If you don't want customers to enter a code at all, you can choose an Automatic Discount, which will apply automatically when the conditions are met.
Step 5: Choose the Discount Value
Now decide what type of discount you'd like to offer.
You can choose:
- A percentage off (e.g. 10%)
- A fixed amount off (e.g. £10)
For this example, I've selected 10% off the entire order.
Step 6: Set the Eligibility
Next, choose who can use the discount.
For example, you can make it available to:
- Everyone
- Specific customer groups
- Individual customers
Choose whichever option best suits your promotion.
Step 7: Add Purchase Requirements (Optional)
If you'd like, you can set conditions before the discount applies.
For example:
- Minimum spend
- Minimum quantity of items
Or, if you don't need any requirements, simply leave this section as it is.
Step 8: Set Usage Limits
You can also control how often the discount can be used.
Options include:
- Limiting the total number of uses
- Restricting customers to one use each
- Choosing whether the discount can be combined with other offers
This gives you plenty of flexibility depending on the type of promotion you're running.
Step 9: Set an Expiry Date (Optional)
Finally, if you want the promotion to end automatically, you can choose an end date and time.
If you don't want the discount to expire, simply leave this blank.
Once you're happy with everything, click Save.
That's it—your discount is now live!
Test Your Discount
Before sharing your new discount code with customers, it's always a good idea to test it yourself.
Add a product to your basket, enter the discount code at checkout, and make sure it applies exactly as expected.
Final Thoughts
Creating discount codes in Shopify is a simple but effective way to encourage more sales and reward your customers. Whether you're running a seasonal promotion, offering a welcome discount, or rewarding repeat customers, Shopify gives you plenty of options to customise your offers.
Don't be afraid to experiment with the different discount types and settings to see what works best for your store. Once you've created your first one, you'll see just how easy the process is!
